North-Portugal-Holiday-Rentals.com is now legally under the control of a former customer of Keith Potter (who used to operate this domain for holiday lets and real estate sales in the North of Portugal, but not any more!).

If you buy property here in Portugal, make sure everything is recorded in writing, and signed by all the parties. Ensure all the details presented to you in the sales advertisement are 100% accurate and legally documented. Make sure the seller or their agent fully details the buying price, what this includes, and what the taxes are likely to be. Ensure the price you pay for your property is fully and properly recorded in the sale agreement and land registry documents. Make sure the sale agreement, land registry documents (deeds) and fiscal tax documents all agree with each other. Make sure nothing is omitted from the land registry documents (deeds) that was advertised / promised to you. Make sure you receive a copy of the land registry documents filed by the lawyer immediately after they are filed and, if you do not understand them, have them fully translated. As only one lawyer is used by both the property seller and buyer, I can not recommend enough that you get your own lawyer from a 3rd party recommendation, that you do not use the lawyer put forward by the sales agent or property owner.

How come I got Keith Potter's domain (north-portugal-holiday-rentals.com)?

Having a legal / legitimate interest in him and his business, I was aware Keith Potter had his property and business advertised for sale and was watching his then web site on this domain, north-portugal-holiday-rentals.com, for progress. On the 4th August 2011, I saw that his web site had stopped functioning, so I contacted his web hosting company to let them know north-portugal-holiday-rentals.com was down / inoperative. They did not reply and the site did not come back online, so I concluded Mr. Potter had deserted / terminated the hosting account. I saw the domain was due for renewal in the near future and suspected Mr. Potter would desert / terminate that too, and he did. His registrar (Tucows) later showed that the domain had not been renewed (that it had been deserted) and then was going to be released after a certain amount of time (so Mr. Potter could renew it still if he wanted to) for anyone else to buy. On the 19th December 2011, I checked and it had been released, so I bought it. So, for over 4 months, from the 4th August to 19th December 2011, Keith Potter had deserted his web site and this domain. Please understand, both Mr. Potter's hosting company and domain registrar would have contacted him several times regarding the fact he might lose his web site and domain, so I did nothing underhand buying the domain as clearly, Mr. Potter had long deserted it and showed no interest in renewing it at the time.

Update

Mr Potter has contacted me and indicated he was unable to sell his property & business here in Portugal / he is going to be conducting business in the area again. Mr Potter refused to elaborate on what business exactly he might / would be conducting in this area, though I suspect he means he will be renting out the two log cabins, an apartment and a small rustic house in his grounds as he has done before. I do not know if he will start up a new holiday rental site and offer a holiday reservations service for other property owners in the area; I doubt it, as otherwise he would not presumably have let this domain lapse (which allowed me to buy it). I suspect he will not be getting back into real estate sales either, though I can not be sure.
